Ecology
Grows in dense clusters on decayed stumps and logs of conifers in coniferous and mixed forest, rarely also found on birch.
Notes
Good edible mushroom, but use only the caps and the upper part of the stem, as the lower part often becomes woody in consistency.
Similar species
Hypholoma fasciculare is similar but has a bitter taste and yellow-green gills, poisonous. H. lateritium has a bitter taste and a brick-red cap, poisonous. Flammula alnicola has a yellower cap and brown spore print, not poisonous but inedible.
