Characteristics

- Cap dull yellow-orange to pale clay-coloured, unzoned or weakly zoned in grey tones, sometimes green-spotted.
- Gills adnate to slightly decurrent, pale reddish-grey.
- Stem with irregular scrobiculate spots.
- Flesh exudes a wine-red latex in fresh injuries.

Ecology

Grows with pine on calcareous soil in southern Sweden, mainly on Gotland.

Notes

A good edible mushroom that works well in soups, sauces and stews.

Similar species

All saffron milkcaps exude a carrot-coloured to wine-red latex in fresh injuries and are good edible mushrooms. Lactarius sanguifluus is the only saffron milkcap that exudes a wine-red latex immediately after the flesh is broken.
