Characteristics

- Cap hemispherical when young, with age convex to expanded with a depressed centre, yellow-green to grass-green.
- Gills adnate, white, with age yellowish-white and often brown-spotted.
- Stem white, with age often brown-spotted towards the base.
- Flesh white, often with brown spots as old.
- Taste mild, sometimes somewhat acrid when young.

Ecology

Grows with birch in forests and parks throughout the Nordic region.

Notes

Good edible mushroom, but be alert to the deadly poisonous Amanita phalloides. It has a ring and volva on the stem, which can be difficult to detect if the stem base has not been collected or if the ring has fallen off.

Similar species

There are several greenish brittlegills, but for edible mushroom pickers it is usually sufficient to distinguish mild-tasting species from acrid and bitter ones, as most mild Russula species are edible.
