Characteristics
Ecology
Grows with pine, often on nutrient-poor and sandy ground, in sandy pine forest, rocky pine forest and mixed coniferous forest.
Notes
Has long been regarded as one of our best edible tricholomas. New findings point to serious poisoning cases in France, and the Swedish Food Agency now warns of a possible poisoning risk, therefore caution should be observed and one may even choose to refrain from eating Tricholoma equestre in future.
Similar species
Tricholoma frondosae is more slender and has more distinct scales/freckles on the cap, grows with aspen. Tricholoma aestuans has a bitter taste and usually an umbo on the cap.
