Characteristics

– Cap convex, reddish-brown, with a pitted-wrinkled surface, sticky when moist.
– Tubes initially white, turning yellow-green with age, often with brownish pores.
– Stem reddish-brown, usually stout, covered with a white network that becomes darker reddish-brown towards the base.
– Flesh white, violet-brown under the cap cuticle, with a mild taste.

Ecology

Grows with pine in coniferous forests.

Notes

A good edible mushroom with the same culinary value as its relative Boletus edulis.

Similar species

Tylopius felleus has a dark reticulum on the stem and is bitter, inedible.
Boletus edulis has lighter color on the stem and cap, edible.
Boletus reticulatus has a finely tomentose cap and white flesh under the cap cuticle, edible.
Imleria badia lacks a network on the stem and the pores turns blue when touched, edible.
