Characteristics

– Cap red to faded orange with white to yellow-white warty remnants.
– Gills free, white.
– Stem white, with a robust white to yellowish-white ring.
– Stem base swollen, with warty remnants forming scale-like rings.
– Flesh yellowish just below the cap surface.

Ecology

Grows with birch in deciduous forests, coniferous forests, and pastures.

Notes

Contains toxins affecting the nervous system, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, seizures, and palpitations.

Similar species

Inexperienced mushroom pickers may confuse specimens that have lost their warty remnants after heavy rain with any of the red Russula species, but they always lack veil remnants on cap and stem.
