Characteristics
Ecology
Grows in parks, gardens, and open deciduous forests on nutrient-rich soil.
Notes
Edible, but not one of the tastiest. As an edible mushroom picker, you don't need to be able to tell all the related Xerocomoid species apart because none of the similar species are poisonous.
Similar species
Hortiboletus engelii is similar but rarely has a completely bright red cap when young. There are several other similar red-capped species, and microscopic examination is required for certain identification.
