Characteristics
Ecology
Grows in nutrient-rich soil under hazel (Corylus) and oak (Quercus), but is also found in association with Betula, Tilia and Fagus and other broadleaf trees.
Notes
A good and popular edible mushroom. Best to blanch and freeze. Drying may cause it to become bitter in taste.
Similar species
Robust and gives a more compact impression than C. cibarius. Often, the cap margin of C. pallens is more or less "inrolled" even in older fruiting bodies, and the almost white cap surface contrasts beautifully with the egg yolk-colored ridges under the cap.
C. cibarius is uniformly yellow without a clear color contrast between the cap and ridges.
