Characteristics

– Cap bell-shaped, silver-gray to brown-gray with a small umbo in the center.
– Gills initially gray-white, turning black with age and dissolving into an ink-like liquid.
– Stem hollow, white, often with a ring-like zone above the tapered stem base.

Ecology

Grows in tufts on the ground in deciduous forests or on lawns in parks, etc.

Notes

May contain coprine, not edible.

Similar species

Coprinopsis atramentaria is similar but lacks a distinct umbo and often has small brownish scales on the cap.
