Characteristics

– Cap redbrown to yellowbrown, matte, velvety, usually conical but sometimes with a flattened center.
– Gills thick, redbrown, relatively widely spaced.
– Stem redbrown, covered with irregular yellow zigzag bands (veil).

Ecology

Primarily grows with spruce in mossy spruce forests, but also in beech forests and rarely with pine.

Notes

One of the most dangerous poisonous mushrooms. It contains the toxin orellanin, which has a damaging effect on the kidneys. The toxin is not water-soluble, and boiling the mushrooms does not destroy the toxin.

The species has been mistaken for the edible Craterellus tubaeformis. They grow in the same environment but do not resemble each other in appearance.
C. limonius is more yellow and has narrower and lighter gills.
C. gentilis is more slender and is not swollen towards the stem base.
