Characteristics
Ecology
Grows on the ground and on decaying wood of coniferous and deciduous trees throughout Europe.
Notes
Some mushroom guides list G. infula as edible, but the similar-looking G. ambigua contains gyromitrin, the same toxin as in G. esculenta. Therefore not recommended as an edible mushroom.
Similar species
Gyromitra ambigua is very similar and can be most reliably distinguished by microscopic examination, as it has larger and more spindle-shaped spores.
