Characteristics
Ecology
Grows on both living and dead trunks of deciduous trees, especially oak, alder, ash, and willow.
Notes
Edible and in many countries, a popular mushroom with a texture reminiscent of chicken. However, it can cause nausea if it has grown on inappropriate tree species such as yew (Taxus) and Eucalyptus.
Similar species
Aurantiporus croceus is a rare polypore that grows on oak and has a similar color. It does not form roof-tile-shaped caps and has pores that are silver-shimmering and angular in shape.
