Ecology
Forms mycorrhiza with birch in swamp birch forest, mixed forest, fen margins and lake shores. Often on moist ground among Sphagnum.
Similar species
The white cap when young is typical of Leccinum holopus, but it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from white forms of other Leccinum species.
