Characteristics

- Cap hemispherical when young, then convex to expanded with a depressed centre, sticky in wet weather, bright yellow to pale yellow.
- Gills white to cream-yellow, greying with age.
- Stem white, greying in damaged areas and with age.
- Flesh white, with mild taste.

Ecology

Grows with birch, preferably on damp ground.

Similar species

Russula vitellina is smaller and has egg-yolk yellow gills, edible.
Russula ochroleuca has a dirty yellow cap colour and acrid taste, inedible.
Russula fellea has an acrid taste and grows in beech forest.
Russula solaris and Russula raoultii are smaller and have an acrid taste.
