- Cap convex, light brown to olive-brown, finely downy when young, later glabrous.
- Tubes at first white, becoming pink with age.
- Stem yellow-brown to olive-brown, paler and often entirely white at the very top.
- Stem with a strong reticulation that is white above and darker olive-brown below.
- Flesh white, sometimes faintly reddening in cut surfaces, and tasting very bitter.

Ecology
Grows with pine, often near roots and decaying pine stumps, in pine and mixed forest.
Notes
Inedible because of the strongly bitter taste, but probably not poisonous.
Similar species
Can strongly resemble Boletus edulis and Boletus reticulatus, which have paler reticulation on the stem and mild taste.
