Grows with aspen and oak in deciduous and mixed forests.
Notes
Leccinum is a genus with several species that can look very similar. As a mushroom picker, you don't need to distinguish them all, as they are all edible.
Similar species
Leccinum albostipitatum has a more orange cap, and white floccules on the stem. L. versipelle has a brick-red cap color and black floccules on the stem.
