Ecology

Grows in mossy lawns in pastures, deciduous, and mixed forests throughout Europe.

Notes

Edible, but must be thoroughly cooked, otherwise they can cause nausea.

Elfin Saddle agg. is used here as a collective name for several closely related and difficult-to-separate species.

Similar species

Helvella crispa has a similar form and appearance but is entirely white to cream-white in color.
Helvella nigricans is also black, but its stem is not grooved.
It could possibly be confused with poisonous Gyromitra-species, but these are brown in color.
