Suillus bovinus

Characteristics

- Cap convex to expanded, brown-yellow, sometimes with a reddish-brown tone, slimy in wet weather.
- Tubes grey-yellow to brown-yellow, with an olive-brown tone and angular pores.
- Stem yellow-brown, smooth.
- Flesh yellowish-white, tough and elastic.

Ecology

Grows with pine on sandy ground along forest roads and on pine heaths. Occurs in large groups or clusters.

Notes

The cap flesh is so elastic in fully grown fruitbodies that the cap margin can be bent all the way in to the stem without the flesh breaking. Fresh, it is unappetising because of the soft texture, but if dried before preparation, both taste and texture become considerably better.
