Ecology
Grows with oak and hazel, possibly also with beech, on calcareous soil, mainly on Gotland and Öland, rare in the southern parts of the Nordic region.
Notes
Also known as Burgundy truffle and is a good and sought-after edible fungus. The landowner’s permission is required to search for and dig up truffles, and trained truffle dogs are often used.

Tuber mesentericum is very similar and grows in the same type of habitat. It has a more chemical and somewhat unpleasant odour reminiscent of insect repellent or naphthalene.
